Greek Taverna-Style Fried Fish with Ladolemono (Lemon-Olive Oil Sauce)
If you’ve ever sat seaside at a Greek taverna — napkin fluttering in the breeze, waves crashing nearby, and the scent of sizzling fish in the air — then you know what a true pleasure Greek-style fried fish can be. This dish is simple, rustic, and deeply satisfying, capturing the essence of Mediterranean cooking with just a few ingredients.
My personal favourite fish for this recipe is snapper — firm, slightly sweet, and perfect for frying whole. Lightly dusted in seasoned flour and pan-fried until the skin is crisp and golden, it’s served with the ultimate Greek sauce: ladolemono — a bright, garlicky blend of lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, oregano, and salt that’s whisked until silky. Pour it generously over the fish, over your potatoes, over your bread... or just straight onto the plate.
This is how fish is meant to be enjoyed: whole, hot, golden, and drenched in flavour.
Why This Dish is So Loved:
-
Reminds you of summer by the sea, even if you’re home
-
Crispy on the outside, tender and juicy inside
-
That lemon-garlic-olive oil sauce (ladolemono) is pure gold
-
Perfect for a Friday fish night, Lent, or special dinner
-
Comes together with very little effort and maximum flavour
Taverna-Style Tips:
-
Ask your fishmonger to gut, scale, and clean the fish so it’s ready to go.
-
This recipe works beautifully with smaller whole fish too, fried in batches such as red mullet aka Barbounia.
-
Serve with a Greek Salad and you’ve got a complete Greek meal.
-
Don’t skip the sauce — it ties everything together.
Final Thoughts
This dish is Greek simplicity at its best — no fuss, no fancy steps, just quality ingredients, a hot pan, and a lemony sauce that brings it all to life. Whether you’re recreating a taste of your summer holiday or enjoying a casual family dinner, Greek-style fried fish is always a winner.
There’s nothing quite like cracking into crispy skin, squeezing fresh lemon over golden flesh, and mopping up every drop of ladolemono with fresh bread. It’s not just a dish — it’s a ritual.
Greek Taverna-Style Fried Fish with Ladolemono (Lemon-Olive Oil Sauce)
Mary PolitisIngredients
For the Fish:
- 2 whole plate size snapper cleaned and scaled (or your favourite white fish: bream, whiting)
- Plain flour for dusting
- Salt & pepper to season the flour
- Olive oil for frying
For the Ladolemono Sauce:
- Juice of 1–2 lemons
- 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1 garlic clove finely grated or minced
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- Salt to taste
Instructions
Prepare the Fish:
- Pat the fish completely dry with paper towel — this helps get that golden crust. Make a few incisions across the flesh.
- In a shallow bowl, mix plain flour, salt, and pepper.
- Lightly dust the fish all over in the seasoned flour, shaking off any excess.
Fry the Fish:
- In a large frying pan, heat a good amount of olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Carefully place the fish in the pan and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, depending on thickness, until golden and crispy.
- Gently remove and let rest on paper towel.
Make the Sauce (Ladolemono):
- In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, oregano, and salt until the mixture emulsifies and becomes glossy.
- Taste and adjust lemon or salt if needed.
Serve:
- Plate the fish and drizzle generously with the ladolemono.
- Serve with boiled potatoes or beetroot, horta (greens), crusty bread, and extra lemon wedges.
