Freddo Cappuccino

Freddo Cappuccino: Greece’s Coolest Coffee, and My Everyday Obsession

There are coffees you like… and then there’s the one you can’t live without. For me, that’s the Freddo Cappuccino, my go-to iced coffee every time I’m in Greece, no matter the season, no matter the time of day.

Whether I’m starting my morning with a warm, fluffy pita or a creamy, custardy bougatsa, or winding down after lunch with something sweet, the Freddo Cappuccino is always the perfect companion. It’s more than just a caffeine fix, it’s a ritual, a comfort, and honestly, a lifestyle.

So, what exactly is a Freddo Cappuccino?

In the simplest terms, it’s a double shot of espresso served over ice, topped with a thick, velvety layer of cold frothed milk, usually made with skim milk so it’s airy and cloud-like. But in reality? It’s so much more.

The espresso is whizzed until it’s chilled and slightly foamy. Then comes the milk, frothed to perfection and spooned generously over the top. The result is a two-layered masterpiece: bold, cold espresso on the bottom, creamy dreamy milk on top, often finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa.

It’s smooth. It’s strong. It’s refreshing. And it’s unapologetically Greek.

What makes it different?

While iced lattes and cold brews have taken over cafés around the world, the Freddo Cappuccino stands apart, not just for how it’s made, but for what it represents. It’s not rushed. It’s not watered down. It’s crafted, with intention.

In Greece, coffee isn’t just a drink. It’s an experience. You sip it slowly, sitting in the sun, chatting with friends, watching the world go by. Whether you’re by the beach, in the city, or on a quiet island square, that tall glass of Freddo Cappuccino is more than a refreshment, it’s part of the moment.

Why I love it, any time of day

Morning? Freddo Cappuccino and a warm pita or a just-baked bougatsa is my version of heaven.

Midday? It’s the pick-me-up that fuels those long Greek lunches and endless conversations.

Afternoon? Pair it with a piece of baklava or a koulouri, and you’re golden.

No matter the hour, it hits just right, bold enough to energize, light enough to refresh.

If you’ve never tried one, take this as your sign. And if you’re in Greece? Find the nearest café, order a Freddo Cappuccino (με κανέλα, παρακαλώ — with cinnamon, please), and thank me later.

FREDDO CAPPUCCINO | Just Like Greece

Mary Politis
If you’ve ever sat at a sunny Greek café sipping a tall glass of cold, creamy coffee and wondered, “How do they make it taste this good?” You’re in the right place. The Freddo Cappuccino is Greece’s most beloved iced coffee, and once you master it at home, there’s no going back to regular iced lattes. It’s strong, smooth, and topped with a luxurious layer of cold frothed milk that somehow makes everything feel just right. Here’s how to make one just like they do in Greece, with a few tips that make all the difference.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Servings 1 serve

Ingredients

  • Double shot of espresso freshly brewed
  • Sugar to taste
  • Ice you’ll need a good handful
  • About 1/3 cup of skim milk MUST be skim
  • Ground cinnamon to finish (optional, but highly recommended)

Instructions

  • Start with the stainless steel cup, place it in the freezer for a few minutes before you begin. This is the secret to thick, creamy froth: everything has to be COLD.
  • Brew your double shot of espresso and add sugar now while it’s hot, if you’re using any. Stir to dissolve.
  • To a glass with ice, add the hot espresso and whizz it on high for 10–15 seconds (if using a stand machine frother, be careful not to touch the glass with the stick, keep it centred). You’re cooling the fast and getting a little crema-like froth going on the surface.
  • Pour the chilled espresso into your serving glass over fresh ice, straining out the first set of ice.
  • Take your stainless steel cup out of the freezer, add about 1/4 cup of skim milk, and froth it like crazy, until it becomes thick, glossy, and almost cloud-like.
  • Pour the frothed milk gently over your espresso.
  • Finish with a dusting of cinnamon, if you like a bit of spice.
